Can I get a-kassa and study at the same time?

I have been a member for more than 12 months and have been working for more than 5 years. If I get unemployed and get a-kassa and unemployment benefits am I allowed to study at the university to get higher chances to find a new job?

what are the rules regarding studying and getting a-kassa benefits?

Thanks in advance,

  • Hej Barbara!
    Thanks for your question.

The basic rule when you receive a-kassa is that you are not allowed to study. But no rule without exeption!

Part-time studies during maximum 20 weeks
There is an opportunity to study part-time when receiving unemployment benefit during maximum 20 weeks if the following conditions are fulfilled.
    • The pace of the studies can be maximum 50 percent of full-time studies
    • You have not left your previous employment because of the studies
    • The studies must not prevent you from seeking or accepting a new employment
    • You are not nor have you previously received student aid (CSN) for these studiesFull-time studies during maximum 15 days
Full time studies for maximum 15 days
We can approve applications for 15 days of full time studies. The conditions are that the course or activity must:

    • give an orientation of different professions or educations or
    •  ease the transition from one profession to another.

  • Does this rule also apply to learning the Swedish language part time through SFI (Swedish for Immigrants), which has evening classes only twice a week?

    Thank you.
  • Hello Daniah!

The part time rule also applies on SFI.

    Have a nice day.

    Kind regards, Anna
