Will a scholarship provided by a university fund affect the amount of unemployment benefice?

I have encountered some obstacles in my PhD and feel that I would be eligible to apply to my University's Donationstipendier scholarship fund, especially the one about extending the PhD for 3 more months with a total value of SEK 60,000. My only worry is that accepting such a scholarship would affect my eligibility to apply for the unemployment benefit from the Akademikernas A-kassa after the end of the scholarship and the defense. Will it or not? Is it fine to apply for that small extension?

  • Hello Zoe and thanks for your question!

Scholarships or stipends that are not an actual employment can never in itself make you qualified for unemployment benefits. Only regular taxed work is what makes you qualify for unemployment benefits.

However, as long as you are on a scholarship and still registered as a full time PhD-student this wont affect you in a negative way. We can skip the periods in time where you have been a full time PhD-student and make your qulification based on your employment before the time with scholarship.

  • Hey Petter!

I'm not sure to understand correctly the second paragraph of your answer.

What I understand from it, is that we could ignore the 3 months of scholarship at the end of the PhD.  We would take my last months of regular full time university paid PhD student salary for the calculation of unemployment benefit instead. The scholarship wouldn't affect the final amount. Is that right?

  • Hello Zoe!

Yes, exactly. As long as you still have been registered as a full time PhD.
