Can I become a member of a-kassa while I'm still studying

Hi,
My name is Vamshi Pulluri. I am an international masters student at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. I completed 2 semesters of masters (60 credits) and I did not do any job as of now. How meaningful is it to become a member of a-kassa now. or should I become the member after I complete my masters and start working?

  • Hi Vamshi!

Thank you for your question. We recommend that you join us as soon as possible. The reason for this is because there are two types of compensation you can receive from us; basic compensation or income-related compensation. The main condition is that you must have worked at least 80 hours a month for at least 6 months during the last 12 months before you became unemployed.

In order to receive benefit based on your previous income you also need to have been a member of an unemployment fund during at least twelve months when you become unemployed. If you are not a member, or if you have been a member for less than twelve months you can be eligible for a lower benefit, based on the amount of hours you have been working.

    More about the benefit

    Best regards, Lydia
