My PhD contract ended and I still working on my research project

I am writing to inquire about the eligibility for A-kassa benefits in cases where a doctoral candidate’s contract has ended but still working on their research project.

As I understand it, unemployment benefits can be received once the thesis has been submitted for printing. I have come across a general condition from A-kassa stating that, to qualify for benefits, one must have worked at least 6 months, with a minimum of 60 hours per month, within the past year.

I would like to ask whether this rule applies to PhD candidates as well. When a PhD contract ends, salary payments usually stop, but the candidate may still be engaged in full-time research or thesis completion. I am concerned that this period—unpaid—might not be counted as employment, potentially affecting eligibility.

Specifically, if a candidate continues to work on their research project for more than six months after the contract ends, will this reduce or jeopardise their ability to receive unemployment benefits once the research is complete?

In my case, my contract ended in January 2025. I have passed the final seminar and am currently working on revisions to my monograph, which I expect to complete by July or August. I would like to clarify the rules, particularly whether an extended timeline for completing the monograph would affect my eligibility for benefits.

  • Hello CA and thanks for your question!

As long as you are still registered as a full time Phd student, these extra months of work, withour employment, won't affect your unemployment benefits negatively.

Each month as a full time student without employment will be skipped and replaced with one month earlier in time when we handle your application for benefits.

    All the best
