Gap on employment, PhD studies, Extra contract before graduation
Hi
My employment contract ended in January 2025, but I remain enrolled as a PhD student and expect to finish my dissertation in January 2026.
I would like to confirm how this situation affects my future unemployment benefits:
My employment contract ended in January 2025, but I remain enrolled as a PhD student and expect to finish my dissertation in January 2026.
I would like to confirm how this situation affects my future unemployment benefits:
- My understanding is that the period between the end of my PhD employment (January 2025) and my expected completion (January 2026) should not negatively affect my unemployment benefits, since I am still registered as a full-time PhD student with the university. As I understand it, a-kassa excludes periods of full-time studies without employment and instead calculates benefits based on my previous employment income. Is this correct?
- In this case, do I still need to register with Arbetsförmedlingen immediately after my employment contract ended, even though I continue as a full-time PhD student without salary?
- I have also been offered a short-term teaching contract from September to December 2025. Will this additional contract affect how my unemployment benefits are calculated, or will they still be based on my PhD employment salary?

- Yes, as long as you're still enrolled as a full time Phd student all time between the end of the employment up until the completion of your PhD it won't affect your right to benefits negatively. A-kassa will be calculated on previous employment.
- No, there is no need to register with Arbetsförmedlingen as long as you havent finished you PhD regarding your future rights to unemployment benefits.
- It depends. If you will get a higher unemployment benefit if we include the short-term contract it will be included. If you'll receive better conditions if we make the calculation on your PhD-contract alone we won't include the short-term teaching contract.
All the bestPetter
