Eligibility for unemployment benefits during postdoctoral fellowship (scholarship)

Hello,
I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in Sweden and I am funded through a scholarship (stipend), not a salaried employment contract. I have completed approximately 10 months of my fellowship, with around 14 months remaining in my tenure.

I am considering applying for membership in Akademikernas a-kassa and would like to clarify my eligibility before registering. I am willing to start paying the membership fees from now and would like to understand whether this would make me eligible for unemployment benefits after the completion of my fellowship, in case I do not immediately secure a new position and remain unemployed for some months.

Could you please clarify:
  1. Whether time spent on a postdoctoral scholarship counts toward eligibility for unemployment benefits.
  2. If joining a-kassa now and paying membership fees during my fellowship would make me eligible for benefits after my fellowship ends, even if I have not held a salaried position in Sweden.
  3. What additional conditions (such as previous employment, income requirements, or waiting periods) I would need to meet in order to receive unemployment benefits after my tenure ends?

  • Hello Devi and thanks for your questions!

    1. No, postdoctoral scholaships funded through stipends are not elibeble for unemployment benefits. It's only when you have income from an employment that your mothly salary could be secured through a membership with an a-kassa.
    2. No, joining a-kassa right now while on a stipend would not give you better chances of receiving unemployment benefits after the fellowship.
    3. If you have never had a salaried position in Sweden you can't join a Swedish a-kassa. As soon as you have received salary in Sweden (even only one hour of work) you can join the a-kassa. If you are able to become a member when the fellowship ends there are posibilities of having Swedish a-kassa based on work inside another country inside the EU/EES. My recommendation is that you contact us on phone 08 412 33 00 and choose work inside the EU/EES for information regarding under whicg conditions this might be possible.
    All the best
