Question Regarding Membership and Eligibility During a Postdoc Stipendium Position
Dear Akademikernas a-kassa,
I have a question regarding membership and eligibility during a postdoc stipendium position.
I recently finished my PhD and have been a member of Akademikernas a-kassa for more than a year. I would like to ask about my eligibility in the following situation:
If I apply for and receive a two-year postdoctoral position funded through a stipendium (scholarship), can I still continue to be a member of the a-kassa during this period? Additionally, if I do not find a new job immediately after the postdoc, would I still be eligible for unemployment benefits from the a-kassa?
For example, during my PhD I had a monthly salary of 40,000 SEK (before tax), while the stipendium postdoc offers 31,500 SEK per month (tax-free).
If the answer is yes and I can continue my membership, could you please clarify how much compensation I might receive in this case? Would my income be considered as more than 34,000 SEK per month before tax?
**A stipendium position (or scholarship-based position) is a tax-free arrangement where one receives a fixed amount of money as a grant to cover living expenses while conducting research.
Thank you very much for your help and clarification.
Best regards

Time as a post doc financed with a stipend is in itself not eligeble for unemployment benefits. However if it's a full time post doc position it will be regarded as full time studies. That means that when the post doc is finished one can receive benefits calculated on previous work with a regular salary.
To be able to receive as high benefits as possible in case of unemployment after the post doc, you would highly benefit from continuing your membership during the post doc.
All the best
Petter
Thank you for your clear and detailed response. I have a follow-up question and would appreciate your clarification.
Let’s assume that there are a few months (e.g., 3 months) between the end of my PhD and the start date of the postdoc stipendium. During this period, I would be receiving compensation from Akademikernas a-kassa (plus income insurance through the union).
My questions are:
According to akademikernasakassa.se: “When you are unemployed, you can receive a maximum of SEK 27,200 per month for up to 300 days.”
Thank you again for your help and clarification.
Best regards,
Sam
Unfortunately, it is not possible to receive benefits during an interruption in your studies (a PhD is considered studies). If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 08-412 33 00.
Wishing you a nice day!
